Comments to USFWS re: GYE grizzly bear delisting

The Cougar Fund submitted the following comments in response to the release of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem grizzly bear delisting rule. We feel that the delisting process has been chaotic, muddled, uncoordinated and fails to give us confidence in the ability of the Department of the Interior and the states of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho to produce a cohesive plan for management.

The recovery of the grizzly bear has been a monumental task and the results show great progress, but the calamitous approach to the delisting process is indicative, not of science and sustainability but of political interference, the philosophical territoriality of states ‘rights’, and elevation of traditional western ideology. The bear and its existence going forward must still be held in the public trust, for all, and not become part of the catalog of trophy game opportunities in any state.
